We are excited to report that for the school year 2010-2011, students at Vaughan Elementary met expected growth and made AYP!! The school met 9 out of 9 target goals according to the federal No Child Left Behind. For the school year 2009-2010 the students at Vaughan School met expected growth and received the recognition of “School of Progress” according to ABC status.

The ethnic composition of our school is 29.1% Caucasian, 19.3% Native American, 42.2% African America, 5.3% Multi-Racial, and 4.1% Hispanic. Over three-fourths of our students (80%) qualify for the free/reduced lunch program.

Vaughan Elementary School is located in Vaughan, North Carolina between the Warren County and Halifax County lines. The Vaughan community is a rural area. Many of our students’ parents work in surrounding counties and in larger towns. Various community organizations are very helpful and supportive in our efforts to provide an environment conductive to a quality education.

School Characteristics

Vaughan Elementary School opened its doors in 1956 serving grades kindergarten through seventh grade. Presently, Vaughan Elementary School serves grades Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. The present enrollment is 266 students. The student teacher ratio averages 1:19. Vaughan Elementary School is a Title I school. Our staff consists of a principal, guidance counselor, secretary, media specialist, exceptional children’s teacher, speech therapist, AIG teacher, Spanish teacher, Physical Education teacher, music teacher, school nurse, 12 classroom teachers, Reading Day Tutor, 9 teacher assistants, 2 custodians, 5 bus drivers, and 3 cafeteria staff members.

Vaughan Elementary School is located off Highway 158 in the community of Vaughan. Our students travel to Vaughan Elementary from various communities within Warren County. Students are actively involved in organizations such as the Youth Advisory Council, Safety Patrol, the Peer Helper Program and “WVES TV Morning News Program.”

Intervention programs provide additional help to our students in reading, math, and science. We have several internet based intervention programs as well as a part time reading intervention specialist. Many of our community volunteers also assist our Level I and Level II students in these areas.

The success of the school is accomplished through the inspired efforts of our administrative staff, the committed and dedicated teaching staff, and parents, volunteers and community members. A spirit of excellence permeates the building and the skills and motivation necessary for success and achievement are always instilled in the students.
